In a bold move to address land disputes and evictions in Greater Mubende, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has announced the establishment of a centralized bank account for tenants to deposit annual land nominal fees. This directive aims to curb the defiance of landlords who reject government-set premiums, fueling land evictions in the region.
Speaking at a public rally at Kiboga Ssaza grounds during the conclusion of his Parish Development Model (PDM) tour in Greater Mubende, President Museveni emphasized the need for tenants across all districts to have a secure and transparent mechanism for paying land premiums. He stated that the centralized account would ensure compliance with government regulations and protect tenants from exploitation.
The president has tasked the Minister for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, Hon. Judith Nabakooba, with the responsibility of outlining the procedures for tenants to deposit their land premiums into the established public account. This initiative is expected to bring relief to tenants facing eviction threats and promote harmony between landlords and tenants.
President Museveni’s directive underscores his commitment to addressing land-related challenges and ensuring justice for vulnerable communities. The rollout of the centralized bank account is anticipated to be a significant step toward resolving land disputes and fostering equitable land management practices in Uganda.
