BERLIN
On Saturday, July 20, hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Berlin to demand justice for the senseless killing of William Chedjou, a 37-year-old Cameroonian man who was stabbed to death by a Turkish man during a dispute over a parking space on July 11.
The protest march, organized by several advocacy groups, began at the site of the incident and made its way to the Berlin-Gesundbrunnen district center, highlighting the ongoing issues of racial violence and systemic discrimination faced by Black individuals in Germany.
Chedjou’s killing has sent shockwaves through the African community in Berlin, with many calling for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. The Turkish man responsible for the attack is currently in police custody.
Protesters carried signs bearing messages such as “Justice for William Chedjou,” “Respect Black Lives,” and “Stop Racist Killing,” and chanted “Justice for William!” as they marched through the streets.
The protest serves as a stark reminder of the persistent challenges faced by Black individuals in Germany and worldwide. As the community mourns Chedjou’s loss, there is a renewed call for systemic change in attitudes towards Black people.
Organizers have vowed to continue their efforts, planning more events and outreach activities to maintain momentum and ensure the perpetrator is justly punished.
