In a heartwarming display of determination and resourcefulness, a senior four student at Cardinal Nsubuga Secondary School in Mpigi district, Stella Nakabugo, has paid her school fees with a goat and a bunch of banana.
According to the headteacher, Christine Ikiria Sepuya, Nakabugo was sent home due to an outstanding school fees balance. However, when she arrived home, her father revealed that he was unable to pay the fees. Undeterred, Nakabugo came up with a plan B, gathering a goat and a bunch of banana and returning to school to offer them as payment.
The headteacher, who spoke to our reporter via phone, expressed admiration for Nakabugo’s creative solution. “I have many students facing similar challenges, but Nakabugo’s determination touched me. We try to help, but sometimes we get overwhelmed, and it’s heartening to see students like Nakabugo take initiative,” said Sepuya.
The school has accepted Nakabugo’s unconventional payment, and she is now back in class, focused on her studies. This inspiring story highlights the challenges faced by many students in Uganda and the importance of community support in ensuring access to education.
