MBALE CITY
A 16-year-old Senior Three student of Mbale High School has died by suicide at her home in Mbale City.
The deceased, identified as Nelima Catherine, also known as Nisha, was found dead on Tuesday at her family residence in Bukisukye Lower Cell, Bumutoto Ward, Industrial Division.
According to preliminary police findings, Nelima’s mother, Jennifer Kanyunyuzi, 39, had left her and other children at home before going to town for business.
Police said initial reports indicate that the deceased may have taken her own life following a misunderstanding linked to a love affair. Residents claimed that Nelima suspected her boyfriend of being involved with another girl, although police said the information had not been independently verified.
Elgon region police spokesperson SP Rogers Taitika said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death are ongoing.
“A team of officers from the Homicide Unit and Scene of Crime officers visited the scene and conducted thorough examinations,” Taitika said.
The body was taken to Mbale City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Taitika urged parents, guardians and schools to pay close attention to the mental health and well-being of children.
“We urge members of the public, especially parents, guardians and schools, to remain vigilant about the mental health and well-being of children,” he said urging anyone with information that may assist investigations to report to Mbale Central Police Station.
