Police have arrested a nursery school director after a four-year-old pupil died after reportedly falling into a saucepan of hot tea at school.
The deceased, a middle class pupil, of Spotless Kindergarten in Kawanda-Kivulu, Nabweru Division, Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District reportedly fell into a saucepan containing hot water tof tea that was left unattended to in classroom on April 10.
The pupil sustained severe burns on the lower part of the body and was rushed to Kiruddu National Referral Hospital for treatment.
“It is alleged that on April 10, the deceased fell into a saucepan of hot tea and got severe burns all over the lower body before being rushed to Kiruddu National Referral Hospital,” said SP Racheal Kawala, the spokesperson Kampala Metropolitan Police said.
She added that the child succumbed to the injuries five days later.
Police have since arrested the school director, Elizabeth Aliku, to assist with investigations.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the saucepan of tea had been brought into the classroom and, by the time the incident happened, there was no teacher in class,” Kawala said.
Kawala said that investigators are seeking to establish why the saucepan of hot tea was brought into the classroom and left unattended to.Aliko is expected to face charges of a rush and negligent act causing death.
