A nurse at Tororo district HCIV has been arrested for abuse of office and negligence leading to death of two babies in the hospital last week.
Justine Logose, was arrested on Wednesday following a crisis meeting by the medical superintendent, Dr. Thomas Ochar.
It is alleged that the suspect did not report on duty for two consecutive days (January 1 and 2) when the babies who were in the incubator suffocated and died in the facility’s neonatal unit.
Further reports indicate that the suspect lost her former boyfriend and when he informed her colleagues they did not take it serious.
Dr. Ochar accused the nurse of not informing the respective individuals about her absence from duty which he says led to the death of the babies.
“The situation would have been handled if she had informed us of her absence from duty. She just called her colleagues on phone informing them that she had lost her former boyfriend why they didn’t take serious,” said Ochar.
The suspect however told the meeting that after receiving news of her ex-boyfriend’s death, she informed her immediate supervisor who is the hospital incharge who promised to handle the case with top management.
The Tororo District Health Officer, Dr. Obbo Okoth said his office has been receiving complaints from patients regarding arrogance, absenteeism and extortion from some health workers at the facility.
Okoth disclosed that he recently paid Shs300,000 for a relative whose wife was supposed to undergo a cesarean operation at the hospital and when he called the officer on duty, he did not pick up his call wondering how poor ordinary people access services at the hospital. He called for actions to save locals from such cases.
