Ugandan Fugitive Extradited to Rwanda Over Torture Charges
Authorities in Uganda have extradited Gitangaza Prince, a suspect wanted in Rwanda on charges of torture. The suspect is accused of assaulting a Burundian national, Haberumugabo Guy Divin, in November 2024 in Rwanda’s Kicukiro District.
The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) confirmed the transfer, stating, “Today, Rwanda received Gitangaza Prince, who fled to Uganda after being involved in the crime of torture committed against Haberumugabo Guy Divin.”
The incident reportedly stemmed from an accusation of theft. Gitangaza, along with other individuals, allegedly subjected Haberumugabo to severe torture over claims that he had stolen three mobile phones and a laptop.
Rwandan authorities have already detained eight other individuals linked to the crime, and they are awaiting court proceedings. The RIB emphasized its commitment to international cooperation, warning fugitives that they would face justice regardless of their attempts to evade it.
Gitamenteza’s extradition was facilitated through close collaboration between Uganda and Rwanda under the mutual legal assistance framework. The suspect was handed over at the Kagitumba One Stop Border Post during a formal handover attended by officials from both countries. Rwanda’s delegation was led by Jean Bosco Zingiro of INTERPOL National Central Bureau—Kigali, while Uganda was represented by Assistant Superintendent of Police Otekat Andrew Mike.
As investigations continue, Rwandan authorities reaffirm their dedication to ensuring accountability for crimes committed within the nation.
