Ivan Kahangire is the brain behind the inaugural Virunga Mountains Marathon that is slated to happen on 1st June 2024 in Kisoro District located in the extreme south western part of Uganda.

The Virunga Mountains also known as Mufumbiro are a chain of volcanoes in East Africa stretching through Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Uganda.

The mountain range consists of eight major volcanoes of which Three are in Uganda ( Muhabura, Sabinyo & Gahinga)  and are home to various Flora and Fauna and famously known as the home of the endangered mountain Gorillas.

The Virunga Mountains Marathon is organized to fundraise and raise awareness about the mission to equip the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Kisoro Hospital and the very first ICU in the District.

Anesthesiologist and Intensive Care Specialist Dr. Arthur Kwizera is the vision bearer that formed the original thought to establish an ICU at Kisoro Hospital.
Early reports indicate that Dr. Kwizera, a native of Busanza Sub County in Kisoro District was driven in part, to set up the ICU in Kisoro after a devastating loss of his own father who died while at Kisoro Hospital due to lack of ICU services.

Participating in the Virunga Mountains Marathon means every mile you run makes a difference and supports the mission to build a healthier world.
