Traffic police has cracked whip and arrested 3877 motorists and 997 Boda Boda cyclists without valid licenses, reflector jackets and warning signs in various parts of the country.
SP Michael Kananura, spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety said during a media engagement at police headquarters in Naguru on Monday November 6 that the riders were arrested and their motorcycles impounded during the course of last week. He added that the majority of the offenders were arrested within Kampala metropolitan areas.
“A total of 3,877 offenders were fined for using motor vehicles without reflectors or warning signs. For the period of one week, a total of 997 motorcycles were impounded for various offences. Out of these 402 were riding without licenses,” Kananura explained.
This was during the ongoing operations against motor vehicle drivers and motorcyclists with no invalid driving licenses, lack of reflector jackets and bad driving.
According to police, most of the vehicles and motorcycles were impounded by traffic police backed up by Field Force Unit officers in areas of Kawempe, Nansana, Wandegeya, Nakawa, Natete, and Makindye areas since Monday.
Kananura explained that all impounded vehicle and motorcycles are currently parked at different police stations, and all the riders were consequently arrested.
Police has warned motorists against abandoning mechanically faulted vehicles on the roadside without using emergency traffic roadsigns (triangle reflectors) to alert other road users on the accident ahead.
Kananura said such an act of negligence causes accidents threatening to impound and arrest drivers of all abandoned motor vehicles on the road.
