Buwembo a veteran of the Anti-Museveni struggle on Thursday 12th January,2023 announced that he had resigned from his position as secretary for labour, NEC member and withdrawn membership from the Najjanankumbi party.

This was in a letter addressed to FDC secretary general Hon. Nandala Mafaabi. Buwembo did not devulge into details of his resignation but, he referred to a separate letter he earlier on written to the party president Eng Patrick Oboi Amuriat.

On Sunday morning, he together with others still at large addressed the media at Kamwokya based NUP and were welcomed by NUP national mobiliser Fred Nyanzi alias Chairman Nyanzi and officially allowed membership.

Speaking to the media shortly after being welcomed to the party, Buwembo stated strongly that as a person who believes in constitutionalism and rule of law, he joined NUP because of their objectives and mission.

“I had to find possible ways to join the ‘’KUNGA’’ campaign started by National Unity Platform and I am ready to serve as your servant,” he said

He did not disclose clearly the main intention for his transition to NUP but instead stressed that NUP through her KUNGA Campaign has proven forces of change aimed at bringing closer NUP diehards and all leaders across the country.

Chairman Nyanzi however said that both the FDC and NUP agitate for a noble change of power through their United Forces of Change and KUNGA Campaign, respectively.

The new members taken oaths of alligiance inwhich they denounced ever supporting the Muhoozi Project, speculated heridatory politics between president Museveni and his son Muhoozi Kainerugaba as well as preserving and protecting NUP principles and constitution.

Habib Buwembo, is a former MP aspirant for Lubaga South in the 2016 elections which he lost to Hon. Paul Kato Lubwana.

His name came to limelights when he challenged Kato Lubwama’s victory for lack of proper academic documents, arguing that the legislator connived with Makerere University and was admitted in 1992 for a diploma in Music and Drama yet he hadn’t obtained the minimum mature age of 25.

In the petition, Buwembo asked the High Court to nullify Kato Lubwama’s election victory on grounds that he did not have the requisite minimum academic requirements for him to represent the people of Lubaga South.

Upon hearing the petition, Kato Lubwama sought to throw out Buwembo case, saying that he had filed it out of time. In the final ruling, court ordered Kato Lubwama to pay all the costs in the 2016 election petition filed against him by Habib Buwembo who sought to challenge the applicant’s requisite academic qualifications for Member of Parliament pursuant to the Parliamentary Elections Act, 2005(PEA).

Buwembo is also a known human rights and political activist and he was in 2022 arrested and detained for over three months for allegedly holding a press briefing at Pope Paul Hotel in Rubaga on unlawful kidnapping of Ugandans by security agencies. He was later released on bail.
