OYAM
Opposition Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) say a despicable campaign of intimidation by President Yoweri Museveni’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) in the forthcoming Oyam North by-election makes a mockery of the polls.
Hon. Jimmy Akena, the party president who is currently camped in Oyam to campaign for their party candidate Dr. Eunice Apio Otuko alleges there are systematic attempts by the ruling NRM to intimidate voters and rig in favour of their candidate on the polling day, July 6.
Opposition parties have time and again pointed an accusing finger to NRM of military deployments to aid in ballot stuffing, voter intimidation and other election malpractices the most recent being the Bukedea district LC5 Chairperson by-election where FDC withdrew their candidate on voting day over alleged rigging. The NRM candidate Mary Akol was declared a winner.
However, Akena warns that UPC won’t allow these tactics and revealed their readiness for protection of votes.
“Do not think you can threaten us and rig the vote. We’re here until the final vote is cast and we shall protect our vote.” Hon. Akena said.
He urged the electorates in Oyam North to turn up in large numbers and vote for Dr. Apio on the polling day.
“I recall when we camped here for the votes of Samuel Engola Junior. We fought for UPC votes and some of our members were badly beaten because of UPC. As UPC President, I will always support Party candidates. I have been in Oyam campaigning for UPC candidates and I’m here again to campaign for Dr. Eunice Otuko Apio in the Oyam North by-election. I request for your vote and support,” he said
Campaigns for the Oyam North County Parliamentary by-election started on June 22 and on Tuesday 4th July, 2023.
