A UPDF soldier is behind the bars for shooting a fisherman who was involved in illegal fishing on Lake Kyoga.
The incident occured on 1st May, 2024 when the UPDF fisheries protection unit officers were conducting an operation at Kitwe landing site on Lake Kyoga, in Amolatar district.
Lt. Rauben Ndifuna identified the deceased as Charles Wanya while the arrested soldier has been identified as Sgt Moses Niwagira.
“It is alleged that the victim resisted arrest using by fighting using an oar and in the scuffle, Niwagira sustained injuries on the arm. In self-defense, he tried to shoot in the air but the bullet hit Wanya on the head”, Ndifuna said.
North Kyoga police spokesperson, Patrick Okema confirmed the arrest and noted that 12 suspects were arrested during the operation and taken to police for further management.
Security further reported that the body was taken to Amolatar Health Centre IV and the suspect was arrested and is currently are under Updf custody.
