Mbarara journalists came together to celebrate World Press Freedom Day with a series of events aimed at promoting responsible journalism in the region. The day kicked off with journalists planting trees in various schools, symbolizing their commitment to environmental conservation. The Mass that followed, led by Rev Father Silivenus Ndugwa, emphasized the importance of accurate and ethical reporting.

During his sermon, Father Ndugwa highlighted the role of journalists as informers of society and urged them to always verify their sources to avoid spreading misinformation. He stressed that journalists have a significant influence on public opinion and therefore must exercise their power responsibly.

Hon Tusiime Julius the MP for Rwampara East, reiterated the importance of press freedom guaranteed by the Ugandan Constitution and urged journalists to uphold ethical standards in their reporting.

The theme of this year’s World Press Freedom Day, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis”, was echoed by Fr. Mutabaruka Charles, the resource mobilizer for the University of St Josephs. He commended the journalists for their efforts in planting trees, emphasizing the crucial role of the media in raising awareness about environmental issues.

The celebration of World Press Freedom Day in Mbarara served as a reminder of the power of the press in shaping public discourse and the need for journalists to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in their work. By planting trees and embracing the theme of environmental stewardship, Mbarara journalists demonstrated their commitment to using their platform for the betterment of society.
