The assaulted UMEME contractor, Bony Bukenya who was captured in a video being assaulted by Ruhinda North county lawmaker Hon. Thomas Tayebwa has today withdrawn charges against the legislator.

“In the video captured by the contractor, the MP is seen giving  orders to his driver to strip the man and he receives up to 10 strokes of the cane,”

According to Bukenya, an agreement follows a series of meetings held with the legislator on resolving the matters amicably.

Bukenya said Tayebwa committed the offences out of poor personal judgements but accepted to pardon him.

He said the decision to withdraw the charges was after being approached by a section if politicians (undisclosed) who seduced him to use his situation to settle political and personal issues with the suspect.

“I have come to the conclusion after being approached by several people who want to use my situation to settle political and personal issues with Hon. Thomas Tayebwa but I declined because doing so would deny a chance to the rest of country to learn how to avoid and deal with a similar situation in the near future,” said Bukenya.

In a signed document by the two parties on Saturday August 29, Hon.Tayebwa admitted guilty of an offence and apologized to the aggrieved party and the nation.

He revealed that the two parties have reached an agreed consensus to resolve the matter.

“We have since reached to the victims of the incident and expressed our apologies. We have held reconciliatory meetings with all affected parties and reached an amicable settlement,” read excerpts of the document signed by Hon. Tayebwa.

It should be well recalled that few days ago Umeme Limited opened a case against Hon. Tayebwa on allegations of assaulting one of their contractors while he (the contractor) tried to disconnect illegal power transmissions at the construction site in Busabala purportedly belonging to Hon.Tayebwa.

“UMEME’s attention has been drawn to a video making rounds in which one of our contractor employees is seen beaten at the premises said to belong to Hon. Thomas Tayebwa in Busabala, Kampala. Umeme strongly condemns acts of human rights violation,” Peter Kaujju, the Head of Communications at UMEME said in a statement.

Peter Kaujju, the Spokesman UMEME said a case of assault on Ref: SD/87/26/2020 has been reported at Katwe Police Station.

However, the victim has earleir withdrawn the charges.

By press time, no comments had been obtained from UMEME regarding the withdraw of the charges.

Mp Tayebwa is not the first government official to use his powers to assault while on their lawful duties.
