The Democratic Party has raised concerns over the increasing involvement of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in politics, specifically citing Gen Muhoozi’s recent political remarks on social media. As the Commander of the UPDF, Gen Muhoozi’s actions have sparked concerns about the military’s neutrality in the country’s political landscape.
The Democratic Party has called upon the UPDF to clarify whether General Muhoozi is exempted from the laws governing military officers’ engagement in politics.
They argue that if General Muhoozi wishes to pursue politics, he should first resign from his position and retire from the military.This controversy follows a long-standing debate about the role of the military in politics.
DP’s acting party spokesperson and UYD president, Kiirya Ismail noted that there is selective application of the law.
He alleges that the UPDF is selectively enforcing laws governing military officers’ engagement in politics.He noted that there is precedent for military involvement and warned that Gen Muhoozi’s actions may set a precedent for direct military involvement in politics.
“As Democratic Party we fear that President Museveni’s inaction may be an attempt to establish a monarchy” Kiirya added.
The Democratic Party urges President Museveni, as the appointing authority, to address the situation and ensure that the military remains neutral in Ugandan politics. They emphasize that Gen Muhoozi’s right to join politics should not compromise his position as a military commander.
