The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) president, Hon. Jimmy Akena has announced intentions to push for constitutional amendment within the party to allow party members directly vote for their preferred presidential candidate ahead of the 2026 election.
I shall propose to the next delegation conference to amend the UPC party constitution such that the party president shall be elected by all members of the party,”said Akena.
According to Akena, the amendments will enable members to have a voice in determining their leader. The current system allows party delegates from all the districts of Uganda to endorse the candidates. A candidate with the highest endorsement is declared the party flag bearer in the presidential race.
However, delivering a Christmas message at their party headquarters, Uganda House Kampala, Akena said the constitution should be amended to allow members elect their suitable candidate. He retaliated his presidential bid for the 2026/31 presidential election, and emphasized that UPC will front candidates at all elective positions from local government to president.
In his message, Akena warned Ugandans against extravagance and criminalities during the Christmas season.
“After festivities life continues, January is going to come when parents are required to pay school fees, so you need to be prepared and celebrate responsibly,” he said.
