Recent discussions have highlighted the urgent need for a more direct approach to aid, prioritizing funding for grassroots organizations rather than relying on intermediaries.

Nkwatsibwe Chris,Team Leader, Policy, Governance and Civic Engagement at the Uganda National NGO Forum (UNNGOF), emphasized that with the rising global demand for services, particularly from African countries, funding reductions are a growing concern. However, this challenge also presents an opportunity to rethink local fundraising strategies and embrace localization as a key to sustainable development.

Community-led development is a call to action. By investing in local capacity and leadership, solutions can be designed, owned, and driven by the communities they aim to serve. This is why the NGO Forum prioritizes capacity sharing among local Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), empowering them to mobilize resources, reduce donor dependency, and lead impactful change from within their communities.

Ninyesiga Robert, a certified trainer for Mobilizing Support and Local Fundraising, initiated a discussion this afternoon during a CSO training session on local fundraising on 27th January, 2025 in Kampala. He posed an important question: How are local organizations navigating this landscape? Are we seeing more local initiatives stepping up, or is there still a heavy reliance on foreign aid?

Ninyesiga believes that while foreign funding has its place, especially for immediate large-scale interventions, the future lies in strengthening local fundraising. It’s about creating sustainable models that can thrive with or without external help.

Currently, a dynamic training sessions are underway, engaging a cohort of Civil Society Organizations from across the country in the world of local fundraising. Participants discussed strategies, shared tips, and learnt from each other on how to raise funds locally and maintain community-driven initiatives.

“The training is aimed at covering a range of topics, from grassroots crowdfunding and partnerships to crafting compelling narratives that resonate with local donors. The goal is to equip CSOs with the tools and knowledge needed to boost their local fundraising efforts ” said Nyesiga. He encouraged community members to share their experiences and tips fostering a supportive network where everyone can learn and grow. He also urged those part of a CSO looking to enhance their local fundraising capabilities, or simply curious about the process to reach out to them at NGO forum for collaboration and support.
