The Orungo Corner Water Supply Scheme features a 9.2-kilometer distribution network that delivers safe water to six villages—Apuuton, Ayopo, Ameritele, Acera, Amukurat, and Orungo Corner. This vital infrastructure benefits over 4,024 residents, boosting access to safe water in Katakwi District to 75.8%. A dedicated water user committee has been established to oversee and ensure the long-term sustainability of the scheme.

While at the commissioning ceremony, Vice President Alupo celebrated the impact of the Kanapa Shared Solar Mini Grid in Opeta Village, Magoro Sub-County. This 16kW solar energy system consists of 28 high-capacity panels, each rated at 580W, and two 8kW inverters capable of supporting three-phase applications. Managed by a local committee, the mini-grid promotes community ownership and sustainability.

The system adopts a prepaid model, similar to Yaka, enabling users to access electricity based on their payments. To date, the project has established 41 connections, benefiting approximately 34 households and businesses. By supporting the productive use of electricity, the mini-grid facilitates the operation of three-phase grinding mills, electric motorcycles, popcorn machines, and other equipment—highlighting the critical role of reliable power in fostering small and medium enterprises.

Hon. Magyezi emphasized that the Local Economic Growth Support Project (LEGS), financed by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), the Lives and Livelihood Fund (LLF), and the Government of Uganda, represents a cornerstone of Uganda’s Local Economic Development (LED) Policy. He underlined the significance of such initiatives in driving micro-finance programs and local business development.

“These initiatives are not merely about providing electricity and water. They symbolize empowerment, job creation, and economic growth,” Magyezi stated. He urged the district administration to incorporate these projects into the District Operation and Maintenance Plan to guarantee their longevity.

As the residents of Katakwi embrace these advancements, the shared solar system and Orungo Corner Water Supply Scheme stand as pillars of progress—enhancing livelihoods and encouraging entrepreneurship across the region.
