Court in Masaka has on Monday granted bail to detained MPs Muhammad Ssegirinya (Kawempe North) and Allan Ssewanyana (Makindye West) after spending a week in Kigo prison on charges of murder in the recent Masaka killings.
The MPs were represented by their lawyers Shamim Malende and Erias Lukwago who asked court to grant bail their clients noting that they are innocent ugandans with no a bad track of criminal records.
In her ruling, the High Court Judge Victoria Nakintu Katamba noted that the legislators handed themselves to police and did not give court hard time. She granted them a cash bail of UShs20 million each.
However, by the time of the ruling, all banks were already closed. Parrots UG learned that Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana have spent their night at Kigo Government Prison and will be released tomorrow Tuesday September 21.
It should be recalled that recently the duo were sent on remand to Kitalya prison by the Masaka magistrate court on three charges of murder, attempted murder and terrorism.
Prosecution alleges that on August 23, while at Ssetaala and Ssenya villages in Kimanya-Kabonera Division of Masaka City, the two MPs participated in the murder of Francis Kizza, Sulaiman Kakooza, and Tadeo Kiyimba and attempted to murder Ronald Ssebyato.
The MPs are jointly charged with four more suspects, some of whom according to police confession by culprits in their statements, mention the two MPs as their accomplices.
