KAMULI
Several students were injured, some critically, after a bus transporting learners was involved in a road crash near Busota Health Centre III along the Jinja–Kamuli road on Friday evening.
The accident occurred when a coaster belonging to Buzaya Secondary School, which was transporting students of Nalango Secondary School, collided with a sugarcane truck.
Witnesses said several students sustained fractures and other serious injuries in the collision, with a number of them reported to be in critical condition.
The injured learners were rushed to Kamuli General Hospital and Busota Health Centre III for treatment as emergency responders and members of the public joined efforts to evacuate the victims from the wreckage.
By press time, authorities had not issued an official statement on the incident. The number of casualties remained unclear, and Parrots Media could not independently verify whether there were any fatalities.
The latest crash comes barely a day after the country was plunged into mourning following the fatal King David Junior School accident in Kapchorwa, where 24 people, including pupils, five teachers and the school director, lost their lives after the school bus veered off the road and overturned while returning from an educational tour.
Friday’s crash is the third road accident involving learners in less than three weeks, raising fresh concerns over the safety of school transport despite recent government interventions.
Following the Kapchorwa tragedy, the Government suspended all school trips nationwide and announced stricter regulations governing school transport, including enhanced safety inspections and mandatory compliance measures for vehicles transporting learners.
