His condition then improved but on Monday he had a cardiac arrest and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Born on December 18th, 1964, Nkurunziza was elected the president of Burundi on August 26,2005 a position he has held up to date. He married his dearly wife Denise Bucumi in 1994.

He was the Chairman of the National Council for the Defense of Democracy-Forces for the Defense of Democracy (NCDD-FDD) party, the ruling party, until he was elected as President of Burundi.

In 2015, Nkurunziza contested for a third term which caused tensions among the opposition political groups in Burundi and some members of the NCDD-FDD opposed to his life presidency. This move termed him a Dictator, greedy leader both in Burundi and to international countries. Burundi later went into a referendum to decide whether he should rule for another term of office.

Amidst opposition protests, Nkurunziza was reelected to a third term in the July 2015 presidential election.

However, On 7 June 2018, Nkurunziza announced that he would not seek another term when his current term ends in 2020.

Government in Burundi welcomed his idea and accepted to give him a title of ‘Supreme Leader’ (Supreme Guide to Patriotism) and giving him a luxury villa retirement package worth $540,000.

In May this year, Burundi went into a hotly contested election between Evarest  Ndayishimiye of the ruling party NCDD-FDD and Oppositions Agathon Rwasa among other candidates. Ndayishimiye was declared a winner although the catholic church and opposition didn’t accept the results.

Pierre Nkurunziza died of cardiac arrest today 9th June 2020.
