A young couple in Kanera village, Charkhari, Mahoba tragically ended their lives on Valentine’s Day.
It is alleged that the couple were distant relatives and took the extreme step because their families were against their affair.
On Valentine’s Day, the couple decided to meet near a culvert at 5am. However, due to fear of societal repercussions, the woman (19) consumed poison at her home. When her lover, aged 21, learnt about it, he also consumed some poisonous substance.
Residents immediately alerted his family and took him to the hospital when he revealed that his girlfriend had also consumed poison.
“On his way to hospital, he disclosed that his girlfriend had also consumed poison and was lying unconscious on the terrace of her house.” SHO, Charkhari, GB Gupta said.
He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the community health centre in Charkhari, while his girlfriend, was referred to district hospital where she too succumbed.
Circle officer, Charkhari, Harshita Gangwar, said that evidence showed that their affair had gone awry due to which they ended their lives. “The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination. Further investigations are on,” she said.
