The High Court in Mbarara has begun hearing the murder case of Peter Byamugisha, a resident of Kishojwa Cell, Nyakyera Sub County, Ntungamo District. Eight witnesses are lined up to testify against the accused, including Chairman LC 2, Samson Kamugisha, Julius Mwijukye, Ben Tarimwima, and others still at large.
According to the charge sheet, Byamugisha was allegedly murdered in broad daylight in front of his aunt and others on May 8, 2020. The prosecution alleges that Tarimwima led a mob that tied Byamugisha’s arms, beat him severely, and forced him to confess where he got a sugar cane, resulting in his death after five hours.
During the first mention of the case, Samson Kamugisha pleaded not guilty to the charges. The state prosecutor, Jacob Nahurira, informed the court that the other accused persons were still being held at Ntungamo government prisons and would be transferred soon.
The High Court Judge, Justice Allan Nshimye, entered the not guilty plea and remanded Tarimwima back to prison until Monday to allow the state to transport the other accused and prepare witnesses.
The case has sparked outrage in the community, with many calling for justice for the deceased and his family. The trial is expected to continue on Monday, with the state presenting its witnesses and evidence.
