Police in Rukungiri are actively seeking 43-year-old Nankunda Marisiari following the alleged murder of his 78-year-old mother, Elena Bakeihahwenki. The incident took place at their residence in Kibombo cell, Nyakina parish, Buyanja sub-county, Rukungiri district.
According to reports, on the night of December 6, 2023, around 9:00pm, the suspect allegedly assaulted his mother using her own two walking sticks. The motive behind the attack remains unknown. Shockingly, the assault occurred while Elena was in the company of her young grandchildren, named Akanyijuka Ivan, Kiconco Denise, and Turyatemba Grace.
During the attack, Elena managed to raise an alarm, which caught the attention of her other son, Karugaba Elias. Unfortunately, he too was assaulted by the suspect before fleeing to a nearby coffee plantation. His whereabouts are currently unknown.
The following day, on December 7, 2023, at approximately 3:00pm, Karugaba and other family members discovered Elena’s lifeless body in her bed while preparing to take her to the hospital. The police were notified immediately.
A murder case was later registered at Buyanja police station, crime scene visited by investigators and thoroughly processed for evidence. Elena’s body was transported to Rwakabengo Health Center III mortuary to undergo a postmortem examination, which will aid in the ongoing investigation.
As the police continue their inquiries into the matter, the community in Rukungiri is shocked and saddened by this tragic incident. Such acts of violence within families are deeply distressing and raise concerns about the well-being of vulnerable individuals in society.
The authorities urge anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Nankunda Marisiari to come forward and assist in his apprehension. Meanwhile, the police are working closely with the community to provide support to the grieving family and to ensure the safety of all residents.
ASP Maate Elly, Public Relations Officer for Kigezi region, called for swift justice in such a heinous crime, emphasizing the commitment of the police force to maintaining peace and security within the district.
He noted that investigation into this disturbing incident is ongoing, and the police will continue their efforts to bring the perpetrator to justice and provide closure to the affected family.
