Thirty-six Ugandans, comprising three women and thirty-three men, have been handed over to the Uganda Police Force for further questioning following their arrest by the Kenyan government.
The individuals, all members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) belonging to the Katonga faction, had traveled to Kenya for leadership training. The training, scheduled to start on its own day, was interrupted by the Kenyan authorities, who subsequently detained them and handed them over to Uganda’s External Security Organization (ESO) today.
Paul Mugisha, the Director of Liaison and Protocol in ESO, stated that the suspects had been engaging in behavior that aroused suspicion of criminal activity, prompting the Kenyan government to take action.
Mugisha indicated that the suspects would undergo further investigation by the police to ascertain their intentions in Kenya, especially given the current circumstances.
Samuel Makhoha Mugenyi, Internal Relations Secretary of the FDC in Katonga, explained that the group had gone to Yoweri Pastoral and Leadership College in Kisumu for leadership training. However, the Kenyan police raided the college last night, leading to their arrest.
Mugenyi also claimed that they had all the necessary documents for entry into Kenya but were nonetheless arrested and subjected to torture.
