Five people have been confirmed dead, 14 rescued after a boat they were traveling in capsized in lake Victoria on January 1.
The Ssezibwa region police spokesperson, Hellen Butoto said the accident occurred at around 7pm.
She said the boat was carrying passengers from Zigunga to Zinga island in Buvuma. Several other people are according to police still missing.
According to Butoto, the ill-fated boat, overloaded with Passengers broke into two parts while attempting to dock at Zinga island.

“The boat was carrying undisclosed number of people but, efforts are underway to establish the exact number of individuals on board,” said Butoto.
She added that the 14 survivors were rescued by their colleagues with swimming abilities while others rescued themselves.
The deceased have been identified as Monday Bukenya, 50, Nantaba Sisa, 7, Lydia Nanjita 26, Night Nabano, 9 and Angel Namuwaya, 10.
It is further reported that the majority of survivors, deceased and those still missing are children below the age of 15yrs.
Police said the survivors were rushed to Bugaya hospital for treatment while the search for the still missing persons by marine police is ongoing.
