KAPCHORWA
Kalifani Chemutai, a mobiliser for the National Unity Platform (NUP) in the Sebei sub-region, has died in a road crash in neighbouring Kenya.
Chemutai, 38, died on the night of April 29, 2026, in Endebess area, Trans Nzoia County, according to party officials.
Preliminary reports indicate that Chemutai had travelled to Kenya to visit his sister and was returning to Uganda at the time of the accident. He was riding a motorcycle towards the Suam border point when the crash occurred.
The NUP coordinator for Sebei sub-region, Caleb Noah Cherotich, confirmed the incident on Thursday.
“He had gone to visit his sister. On his way back, he realised he had forgotten his travel documents and decided to return for them when the accident happened,” Cherotich said.
His body has been taken to Kitale Mortuary, where it is being kept pending a postmortem examination and completion of legal procedures.
Chemutai was an active political figure in Sebei, having contested for the Kapchorwa Municipality parliamentary seat in the January 2026 elections, although he was unsuccessful.
He previously contested for Tingey County Member of Parliament seat in 2016 under former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi’s Go Forward political movement but did not win. He later joined NUP and remained active in party mobilisation in the region.
Party officials and local leaders described his death as a loss to the opposition’s grassroots structures in Sebei.
Further details regarding funeral arrangements had not been announced by press time.
