The first female member of parliament in Uganda, Hon. Florence Alice Lubega has passed on, reliable sources told Parrots UG.
Born on 5 November 1917, Lubega has died at the age of 103, few days to her 104th age.
The blacksmiths news of her death was first announced by the Deputy Speaker of parliament Rt. Hon. Annitah Annet Amongi on Twitter.
Amongi mourned the deceased as an inspirational leader of women race in politics.
“Hon Florence Alice Lubega as the first female legislator inspired the rest of us to take up the mantle of leadership.We celebrate her mentorship , inspiration and Courage that opened barriers for woman leaders.May the lord grant her eternal rest.” Amongi eulogized.
Lubega is the first female Ugandan to join Parliament in the independent Uganda in May 1962.
She was the one of the first female legislators of Uganda, being a member of the Legislative Council (LEGCO). She was also a member of the first Ugandan Parliament, and Deputy Minister for Community Development and Labour.
She is the daughter of former Buganda Premier Samuel Wamala and Erina Nantongo. She was also married to her husband late Saulo Lubega with whom they produced children together.
LUBEGA’s EDUCATION BACKGROUND:
She was educated at Gayaza Girls’ School before joining Buloba Teachers’ College. Later she was the first female to be admitted to Makerere College School before joining Oxford University. Upon completion of her university studies in 1946, she returned to teach English at Makerere University.
