Former Tanzania President, H.E Ali Hassan Mwinyi is dead. The former head of State passed on Thursday 29 February, 2024 at Mzena Hospital in Dar-el-salaam where he has been receiving treatment since last week.
The blacksmith news of Mwinyi’s death was announced by President Samia Suluhu Hassan on a national television.
Mwinyi is the country’s second president after he succeeded nationalist Mwalimu Julius Nyerere in 1985. He ruled Tanzania from 1985 to 1995.
Last year in November, Mwinyi was rushed to a hospital in London, UK after he experienced severe chest illnesses and was returned home. On February 2, he was once again hospitalized at Mzena hospital but his family preferred privacy over his sicknesses until last week when reports of his admission broke out.
It is alleged that the former president died of lung cancer.
Tanzanian president Samia Suluhu Hassan has declared a seven days national mourning for the country’s former president. During this period, all flags will fly half-mast thought Tanzania and all Tanzanian embassies across the world.
“On behalf of the people of the United Republic of Tanzania, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives, friends and all Tanzanians for this great loss to the nation,” President Samia Suluhu eulogized.
H. E Ali Hassan Mwinyi will be laid to rest on March 2, 2024 in Zanzibar.
