The Justice Forum (JEEMA) Youth League leader, Musanje Haroona has disagreed with the chairperson of the National Youth Council (NYC), Jacob Eyeru over his letter to the Inspector General of Police IGP Abbas Byakagaba notifying him on the upcoming national mobilization drives by the Yellow Youth Movement, arguing that the action indicates that the council is an extension of the NRM youth league and therefore non-partisan.
“In your NYC headed letter, dated 31st May, 2024, you stated; ” The YYM initiative is an extension of the NRM youth league to mobilize youth in Uganda ahead of the 2026 elections,” said Musanje.
He added, “This clearly indicates a partisan agenda being provided under the guise of NYC activities. Such actions undermine the inclusivity which NYC upholds.”
According to Eyeru’s letter which Parrots Media seen, the mobilization drive was to take place between the month of June and July in Mbarara, Gulu, Mbale and Kampala cities. Accordingly, the initiative said the drive is to champion and exemplify the relevancy of Mass development including quality free education, healthcare and grassroot economic empowerment, mass skilling of the youth and fighting corruption.
However, their counterparts at JEEMA contend that Eyeru’s actions who also doubles as the YYM national coordinator does not only affect the council but also creates partisan bias something that erodes inclusivity, denial of rights and undermining of democratic values which they stand for.
They accuse the council leadership of dragging the youth in chaos whenever it is approaching to election season.
“We demand that you restore trust by ensuring that NYC activities are inclusive and non partisan. It’s unacceptable to continually drag young people into chaos close to elections,” JEEMA Youth League cautioned.
When contacted for a comment, the NYC chairperson, Eyeru asked to get back to us in vain.
