KABALE:
Kabale Regional referral hospital has suspended with immediate effect the use of IV Ceftrianxone IG powder citing antimicrobial resistance pattern to the drug.
Ceftrianxone is a cephalosporin antibiotic and it is used to treat many kinds of bacterial infections, including severe or life-threatening forms such as E. coli, pneumonia, or meningitis.
Ceftrianxone is also used to prevent infection in people having certain types of surgery.
The Kabale Regional referral hospital medicine and Therapeutic committee chairperson, Lauben Kyomukama said that the decision to suspend the drug followed several tests done on different bacteria in the last two years, citing that, it is no longer effective in managing common bacterial infections in the community by 15 percent.
Kyomukama said that the hospital has now resorted to using Benzylpenicillin 1MU/600MG (PFR) IM whose findings show that it is now more effective in managing common bacterial infections.
