KAMPALA
President Museveni has summoned the speaker of parliament, Rt Hon Annette Anitah Among and her deputy Thomas Bangirana Tayebwa to State House for questioning over alleged misappropriation of funds in the house.
The summons follow an activism campaign on social media platforms led by Makerere University journalism lecturer also Uganda’s celebrated cartoonist Jimmy Spire Ssentongo on exposing the mess in the way parliament conducts businesses.
Dubbed #UgandaParliamentExhibition, the campaign has exposed many government and opposition officials at parliament including members of the parliamentary commission, speaker Among and deputy speaker Tayebwa have been implicated in misuse of taxpayer’s money on luxurious expenses.
Insiders at State House say the big man is not happy with the misconduct of Speaker Among and Tayebwa. They have this been summoned for questioning.
This comes at a time when a section of legislators in the 11th parliament, basically from the opposition are seeking to table a motion to censure speaker Among on corruption allegations including increasing her per diem from $900 to $4,000, claiming allowances for trips not taken, and withdrawing hundreds of millions of shillings through aides for purported corporate social responsibility activities, many of which have been in her Bukedea district.
Among is not the only leader in parliament facing crucifixion on social media for being corrupt. Also the former leader of the opposition in parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, is accused of having been fraudulently awarded Shs 500 million in a service award. His party NUP is now demand I that he resigns from his new position as commissioner of parliament.
Few days ago, parliament Publicist, Chris Obore dismissed media reports that parliament spends Shs2.6Bn daily, describing such reporting as cheap interpretation of the national budget. He said such reporting is an insult to the intelligence of the Ugandan public.
