The National Identification Registration Authority, (NIRA) has said they are targeting about 18 million Ugandans to be issued with National Identification Numbers (NINs) in the coming national registration exercise due to commence in June, this year.
The revelation was made by Rosemary Kisembo, the NIRA Executive Director, Rosemary Kisembo during a joint Media briefing at police headquarters Naguru on Tuesday 7th February, 2024.
She added that they will renew National Identification Cards for at least 21 million Ugandans who obtained their identification 10yrs ago at the initial launch of the exercise.
The ED noted that every Ugandan is entitled to get a NIN and those above the age of 16yrs are entitled to possess a National ID and registration in the national register.
The mass registration and renewal of National IDs exercise will commence in June this year and will run for about 10 months in all the 10,717 parishes across the country.
She further noted that they will also add an Iris on the bio metric data they will be collecting from the people during the registration exercise after realizing that the finger print and the facial requirements are not enough after people get involved in physical body destruction.
The recruitment of people who are going to carry out the registration who include, Registration assistants and Data processors is starting this week in all parishes of the country.
She emphasize those to be recruited must be residents of the area where they will be working.
“Those people will be conversant with information and the people who are within the areas, the information that were providing the officers who are working on the exercise” says Kisembo
