Authorities at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital have implemented restrictions on caretakers in response to an Ebola outbreak, which recently resulted in a fatality in Kampala where a male nurse died at Mulago hospital.
The acting hospital director, Dr. Deus Twesigye confirmed this measure on Thursday, dismissing rumors of the facility admitting two suspected Ebola patients.
Dr. Twesigye explained that to prevent overcrowding, each patient would now be allowed only one caretaker.
He detailed that the hospital had admitted two patients the previous weekend. Among them was a 15 year old Burundian from Nakivale refugee camp in Isingiro, who presented with high fever and bloody diarrhea and was immediately placed in isolation. The other patient was a 19 year old female from Kiruhura district.
Despite the medical team’s efforts, the Burundian passed away on Monday and was subsequently buried in Kabazaana, Nakivale refugee camp, under the supervision of health workers.
However, Dr. Deus clarified that test results released on Tuesday confirmed that both patients were suffering from severe enteritis, not Ebola. The 19 year old girl has since recovered and been discharged in good health.
By taking these preventive measures, the hospital aims to ensure the safety and well-being of its patients and staff amidst the ongoing health concerns.
