The Central Executive Committee of National Resistance Movement (NRM) has suspended elections for nationwide grassroot structures at all levels.
The suspension follows Friday meeting at the president’s office in Entebbe where the party national chairman also the president of Uganda H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa
met the CEC to discuss issues concerning the ruling party.
During the meeting, CEC resolved that elections for party structure leaders be suspended until further notice to allow the party electoral commission update members register.
It should be noted that on Wednesday 28th February 2024, President Museveni launched the update of the NRM register and also flagged off the party district registrars who will conduct the exercise.
Elections for NRM structures were scheduled to take place effective 27th March 2024, starting from village levels.
Godfrey Kiganda Suubi, the NRM Vice chairperson for Buganda region told reports that they have suspended the election and that they will first update their register. He said during the registration process, they will also register children aged 16yrs who will be 18yrs (adult suffrage) by the next general elections in 2026.
CEC members also clarified that Vice president H.E Maj. Gen. Jessica Alupo and Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja Musafiri, speaker Anitah Amongi and her deputy Thomas Tayebwa are not members of CEC and that they should no longer attend any of the CEC meeting unless they have been invited courtesy of the national chairman.
