KAMPALA:
Latest reports in Parrots UG newsroom indicate that Police Constable Hershim Mwenyi, a traffic officer attached to Tororo CPS who had been brutally beaten in a mob attack at Nankulabye is not dead.
Nwenyi was earlier on this day announced dead, but close sources within police have told Parrots UG that he is admitted at Mulago hospital receiving treatment.
According to police political commissar, AIGP Asan Kasingye, Nwenyi had moved from Tororo to visit his girlfriend (name withheld) who they developed a misunderstanding over a message in the woman’s phone.
Nwenyi then picked up the phone and walked away and shortly after he had gone toward the Makerere-Kikoni junction, the woman caught up with him and made an alarm accusing him of theft. This attracted neighbours who beat him to pulp in mistaken identity.
The incident happened on January 20, 2022, at around 21:50hrs along Makerere-Nankulabye road junction when an unknown gang of people attacked and beat Mwenyi into coma.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire has said that police visited the crime scene and recovered an iron bar suspected to have been among the weapons used to hit him and took it as an exhibit. He says that the investigators also found a police warrant card with Mwenyi noting that circumstances that lead to the mob are still under inquiry.
Owoyesigyire confirmed that Mwenyi is admitted in Mulago but in critical conditions.
He further disclosed that police got CCT footages in the area which they will use to hunt the perpetrators.
Police has warned the public against acts of mob justice which they say are illegal and punishable by law.
