A breakthrough in the investigation into a series of gruesome murders in Kampala has led to the arrest of a 32-year-old taxi driver, Isaac Niwagaba in Rukiga District.
Niwagaba, a resident of Rwakimuri cell, Bukinda trading center, was apprehended on May 18, 2024, at around 4 pm by a team of detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department and police officers from Rukiga District.
The suspect, a Mukiga by tribe is alleged to have been involved in the kidnapping and murder of young girls in Kampala, using a taxi with registration number UAU 737 W. He is believed to have masterminded the murder of Nassali Jenina, a resident of Kawuku in Kajansi, and was found with her phone, which he used to communicate with his associates.
According to the police, Niwagaba and his accomplices stills at large, would disguise themselves as taxi drivers, lure victims into their vehicle and then strangle and suffocate them with polythene bags. The bodies would then be dumped in nearby bushes within Kampala.
The arrest was made possible through the efforts of Geoffrey Ongomu, an investigating officer from Kajansi police station who had been tracking the suspect. A search of Niwagaba’s room yielded valuable evidence which will aid in further investigations.
The suspect has been handed over to a team of detectives from Kajansi police station under tight security for further investigations and inquiries are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects and bring them to justice.
Elly Matte the Kigezi region police spokesperson has commended the public for their cooperation and urged anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigations.
