Court in Masaka has sent on remand the National Unity Platform members of parliament; Allan Ssewanyana- Makindye West and Muhammad Ssegirinya -Kawempe North to Kigo prison on fresh charges of murder.
It is recalled that the duo were recently rearrested separately as they left Kigo prison after being released on bail by the High Court in Masaka. Earlier alone, the Masaka chief magistrate Charles Yeteise had remanded the legislators to Kigo prison on counts of murder, attempted murder, and terrorism.
The duo were on Wednesday afternoon arraigned before the Masaka Court Grade One Magistrate Grace Wakooli who charged them with new offences of murder.
Prosecution states that Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana caused the death of Bwanika, a resident of Kisekka B village, Kankamba parish in Lwengo District on August 2, 2021.
Court did not allow them to take plea or apply for bail because stating that its a lower court and does not have the jurisdiction to try capital offences such as murder.
The prosecution (the state) has further amended the old charge sheet to include one more suspect one Jackson Kanyike.
The state alleges that the two MPs were allegedly financing Kanyike to commit acts of terrorism and that he (Kanyike) also participated in the murders that happened in Masaka sub region were close to 30 people were killed.
Court remanded the MPs and others still at large to Kigo prison until October 13, 2021 when they will return to court for mention of the cases.
