A student at Namungoona High School has been suspended due to their parent’s failure to attend a mandatory academic visitation day. The parent has been instructed to appear before the school’s academic and disciplinary committee with the child and clear any outstanding fees.
This incident follows a similar situation at Kisaasi College School, where several students were suspended for organizing an unauthorized prom party off-campus.
According to the school’s headteacher, Ibrahim Ssekamatte, the students’ actions were a violation of the values the school has upheld for 29 years. “The school organized a fully financed leaver’s party, but a group of students chose to organize an unauthorized party off-campus, which was marred by significant misconduct and indiscipline,” Ssekamatte said in a statement.
The suspended students have been ordered to return to school on Monday, July 15, 2024, accompanied by their parents or caretakers, for individual case-by-case review.
Additionally, they must pay a fine of Shs100,000 to cover losses incurred by the school and clear their outstanding school fees for the second term.
There are reports of a low turnout at the school-organized party, with only 12 students attending compared to the unauthorized party, which allegedly had a higher attendance.
Ssekamatte has vowed to maintain high standards and discipline at Kisaasi College, emphasizing the importance of both academic and personal growth for its students.
This move has sparked debate among parents and students, with some praising the school’s stance on discipline and others criticizing the suspension as too harsh. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle to balance discipline and freedom in educational institutions.
