Suspended Makerere University students to face disciplinary committee

Makerere University students who were suspended November are set to face the university committee on discipline to answer disciplinary questions.

The nine students were suspended by the University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe for allegedly enticing others into unlawful strike against the 15% fee increanment.

Siperia Mollie Sasiraabo, strike ringleader.

The suspects included; Siperia Mollie Sasiraabo, a third year psychology student and  David Musiri, third year student of Bachelor of Commerce (Ring-leaders of the demonstration), Derrick Ojambo Wabwire – BA. Records and Archives management, Seiz Mutations – BA.commerce, Simon Ssenoga- BA. Industrial organization psychology, Frank Bwambale Journalism student, Ivan Kyeyune – BA Social Sciences, Job Dhabona- BA. Community psychology and Mbajjo Ssebiraaro – Bachelor of  Quantitative Economics.

These were suspended on allegations of leading a demonstration dubbed #MakfeeMustfall which sought to oppose the decision by the university council to increase tuition fee. The suspects will face a disciplinary committee chaired by former  Grade one Magistrate Precious Ngabirano.

Counsel Marvin Saasi, the suspects’ lawyer was quoted saying that his clients are going to experience a travesty of justice in the committee.

Saasi further explained that his clients are limited from exercising their academic freedom rights of speech, assembly, among others.
