In a highly anticipated clash at Kakyeka Stadium in Mbarara, in the Uganda Premier League, Vipers SC secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Mbarara FC.
The match kicked off with both teams optimistic about winning, but it was Vipers who drew first blood. A penalty was awarded after Yunus Sentamu was kicked in the chest by Mbarara’s Yusuf Mafabi in the penalty area just before halftime. The young sensation Allan Okello converted the spot-kick in the 45+3 minute, sending Vipers into the break with a 1-0 lead.
The second half saw Vipers continuing their dominance. Okello struck again with another penalty in the 53rd minute after a handball in the penalty box by Mbarara FC, extending the lead to 2-0. Mbarara FC fought hard to respond and managed to find the net through Ssenkubuge Latif, who brought the score to 2-1 in the 67th minute, igniting hopes for a comeback.
However, Vipers’ veteran striker Yunus Sentamu quashed these hopes by scoring the third goal in the 71st minute, ensuring a firm grip on the match. Despite the Ankole Lions’ efforts, they were unable to close the gap, and the Venoms held on for a well-deserved victory.
This important win leaves Vipers at the top of the table with 16 points from 7 matches, putting pressure on NEC FC and KCCA FC, who are yet to play their seventh match. NEC FC is set to face Lugazi FC on October 30, while KCCA FC will go head-to-head with Maroons FC at the MTN Omondi Stadium on October 31.
As the league intensifies, Vipers’ performance today not only showcases their title ambitions but also leaves fans eagerly awaiting the next fixtures that could shape the league standings in the coming weeks.
