Hundreds of thousand passangers have been seen today overcrowding Bus and Taxi parks in Kampala carrying their lagguage back to home in fear of another lockdown.
The fears aroused when President Museveni issued a directive to ban cross district movements across the country as a measure to combat COVID-19 spread.
During his address on corona virus updates on Sunday evening, Museveni also banned public transport for 42 days.
“All public transport from district to district is suspended for 42 days by 10th June, 1021, except between Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono.” Museveni said.
The directives have prompted Ugandans working in business city Kampala and metropolitan areas but coming from farthest parts of the country to return to upvountry.
Due to the influx of passengers, bus companies in Kampala have hiked transport costs by 45 percent between (UShs 15,000 and 20,000/=) on the gates charged for major routes.
A receipt belonging to Global Coaches bus company which was seen by PARROTS UG issued on 7th June,2021, a fee of UShs 50,000 was charged per passangers from Kampala to Mbarara increasing by Ugx20,000 the the usual Shs 30,000/=.
At Kisenyi Bus terminal, this reporter learned that bus operators increased transport fares abnormally, for instance UShs 60,000 was required to transport an individual from Kampala to Fort Portal from the normal fares of UShs 40,000 while those travelling to Kisoro transport has been hiked from UShs 50,000 to UShs 80,000.
