The Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council has approved 17 National Technician Diploma curricula out of 34 submitted for consideration.
Moses Kasakya, the Executive Director of the TVET Council, said the approved curricula are ready for implementation and are intended to respond to labour-market needs and improve the quality of skills training in the country.
Kasakya said the curricula were developed through an employer-engaged process involving labour-market analysis, occupational mapping, occupational profiling and competence profiling, as well as consultations with industry and TVET providers.
He said the curricula were later subjected to consultation and validation involving Sector Skills Expert Committees and industry experts before being submitted to the Council for approval.
“Following this process, 17 National Technician Diploma curricula have been approved by the TVET Council and are ready for implementation,” Kasakya said.
The approved programmes cover four clusters, mechanical, electrical, civil and information and communication technology (ICT).

Under the mechanical cluster, the approved programmes include National Technician Diplomas in Welding and Fabrication Technology, Heavy Automotive Technology and Light Automotive Technology, alongside Technician Diplomas in Mechanical and Manufacturing Technology and Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology.
The electrical cluster includes National Technician Diplomas in Electrical and Electronics Technology, Mechatronics Technology, and Telecommunication and Electronics Technology.
The civil cluster has programmes in Roads and Bridges Construction Technology, Water and Irrigation Technology, Building Construction Technology and Architecture.
Five ICT programmes were also approved, covering Cyber Security, Digital Forensic and Governance; Computer Networking; Software Development; Data Science and Analytics; and Multimedia Production and Motion Design Technology.
Kasakya called on colleges involved in technology education and training to apply for accreditation to offer the respective revised TVET programmes.
He said the approval of the curricula marks a significant milestone in curriculum development and will help align TVET training with the skills demanded by employers.
The development comes amid efforts to strengthen quality assurance in Uganda’s TVET system, with the Council also responsible for regulating providers, setting standards, licensing and accrediting TVET institutions, trainers and programmes.
