The police in Kampala are holding two suspects on charges of impersonation and extortion of money by false pretence.
The suspects identified as Lawrence Begumisa and Ronald Rwabahangi were arrested following an operation by the State House Anti Corruption Unit (SH-ACU) and Uganda Police Force aimed to crack down on impersonators.
ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy PRO Kampala Metropolitan Police says the duo were allegedly extorting money from unsuspecting citizens promising to help in handling their court cases and meeting the president.
“…in this specific incident the group approached a woman and they were claiming to handle her case at SH-ACU as well as connecting her to meet the President, they were also asking for 3 million Ugandan shillings,” Luke said in a press statement.
He says police is on investigations to burst the criminal syndicates are ongoing.
He said operations will continue to crackdown the culprits and appealed to the members of the public to report impersonators to relevant authorities.
“These operations will continue to get rid of syndicates that have obtaining money from unsuspecting victims by false pretenses,” he said.
