Opposition political party UPC has called upon the ruling government to pave way for a peaceful and democratic government transition in Uganda.
Sharon Oyat Arach, the party spokesperson was speaking to journalists at their party headquarters, Uganda House Kampala on Wednesday on the upcoming 61st Independence Day Celebrations. She criticized the theme of celebration stating that it is academic and not realistic.
“The theme for this year’s independence celebrations my remain academic or elusive if we do not handle properly the political question to do with transition,” she said
Arach challenged the government to be certain to the political future of this country.
On another hand, the UPC applauded government for efforts to restore values of independence established by the UPC and other past governments such as revamping of the Uganda Airlines, Standard Guage Railway among other mixed economies.
Faizo Muzeyi, head of media and communications at UPC opines that for the government to boast of independence, it should ensure a self-reliance economy than over relying on western aid. He called for unity among all public institutions, respect for freedom of expression and release of all political prisoners.
Uganda will on October 9 celebrate her 61st Independence at Kitgum district Farm Institute in Kitgum municipality under the theme; “Sustaining a United and progressive nation: Taking charge of our future as a free nation”.
On Tuesday, the minister of presidency Milly Babalanda said president Museveni will be the Chief Guest together with special guests from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) led by their state minister for foreign affairs. At least 41 individuals will receive medals honored by the presidentil towards their contributions towards national development.
