As Uganda continues to grapple with infrastructure challenges and crime rates, there are numerous voices calling for expeditious processes to develop the Standard Gauge Railway and Meter Gauge projects as alternatives to provide cheaper transport to goods and services.
Opposition Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) says there is need for a sound transport system to boost economic growth and regional connectivity.
“Equally, the roads should be in good shape and meet the required standards in the region of East Africa as opposed to lagging behind in the region”, said Sharon Oyat Arach, UPC spokesperson.
Arach was speaking to journalists at their party headquarters on Wednesday when she expressed concerns about the county’s poor road conditions and worsening traffic congestion.
She emphasized the importance of having a reliable and efficient transportation network, including roads, water, and air transport, to facilitate the movement of goods and people within the East African Community.

The party also expressed concern over the recent wave of criminality involving Boda Boda operators and impersonators posing as security operatives, and commended the army for arresting a suspect who had been committing crimes in communities while impersonating an army officer.
However, UPC noted that more efforts are needed from all security agencies to address this growing concern and ensure the safety and security of citizens.
The government has yet to respond to UPC’s demands, but experts say that investing in transportation infrastructure and enhancing security measures are critical for Uganda’s economic development and regional integration.
