The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party has called on the government to emulate the life of Bishop Janani Luwum by prioritizing the basic needs and welfare of its citizens.
The call was made by the party head of media and communications, Muzeyi Faizo during a media engagement at their headquarters on Wednesday.

He said that the country is faced with high cost of living, human rights abuses and poor service delivery which he said need to be improved.
“Archbishop Janani Luwum in all his life and works, he sacrificed himself and stood firm against all undemocratic excesses including abductions, torture and death of people as well as preaching against human rights abuses by the army and security organs and making physical follow-ups to various detention centres across the country which centres used to be no go areas to members of the public,” Muzeyi recalled.
As we pay tribute and honour the personal sacrifice, Muzeyi added, “UPC urges Government and all stakeholders to fully appreciate that the most important asset Uganda owns is primarily its people whose basic needs like food, shelter, medication, education, and security among others deserve to be given a great priority.”

He said prioritizing provision for quality basic needs will enable in improving lives and welfare of Ugandans.
On 16th February, Uganda will mark the 47th commemoration of the martyrdom of the Archbishop who was brutally shot dead on the orders of the then President of Uganda, Field Marshall Idi Amin Dada on 16th February 1977 along Kampala road.
He was murdered together with the former Inspector General of Police Wilson Erinayo Oryema, and former Defence Minister Charles Oboth Ofumbi for criticizing the excesses of Idi Amin’s regime.
This year’s celebration of Janai Luwum day will take place at Wiigweng in Mucwini sub-county, Kitgum district. The day is organized under the theme; “Confirming to the truth of God’s word that transforms; Romans 12:1-2)”.
UPC commended the remarkable works and spiritual sacrifices of Luwum and asked the public to reflect his legacy by possessing true sense of humanity and liberation theology.
