National Environmental Authority (NEMA) together with Uganda police and KCCA enforcement team on Friday carried out an operation in which they evicted vendors operating illegally on Lubigi wetlands in Busenga and Bulenga along Kampala-Mityana road.
They were joined by the UPDF to eject more people encroaching the wetlands.
William Lubuulwa, spokesperson of NEMA says the operation is inline with the implementation of the presidential directive on restoration of wetlands across the country.
H.E President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has on different occasions directed the removal of all encroachers on wetlands who degrade the environment.
Lubuulwa said the victims were first given Restoration Orders by NEMA but they did not heed to the authority’s call. He noted that the operations will continue to other parts of the country to evict all wetland settlers.
The Lubigi /Mayanja valley had been settled by vendors dealing in various small businesses such as bricklayers, timber, mechanics, car washing bays and car parking among others.
NEMA appeals to all the wetland encroachers carrying out activities within the wetland to voluntarily vacate.
