The deputy Speaker of Parliament of the Republic of Uganda, Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa has expressed Government commitment to support Kampala International University and other private universities in the country.
“Government has enhanced all the necessary funding and parliament is ready to approve all the fundings regarding Ebola,” Tayebwa said.
Tayebwa was responding to request by Prof . Mouhamad Mpezamihiigo, the Vice Chancellor KIU to government to extend technical, financial support and upgrade Kampala International University teaching hospital (KIUTH) into a regional referral hospital owing to its its contributions on improving the health sector in Uganda especially in fighting epidemics like ebola and COVID-19 diseases. This was during the 26th Graduation ceremony at the University main campus in Kansanga on Saturday.
Tayebwa who was representing Speaker Anitah Among as the guest of honor urged KIU to invest more in health sciences in order to get necessary support.
“Recently, parliament passed the organ donation bill and we put very stringent requirements but institutions like KIUTH already have the requirements put in place,” Tayebwa noted
“We request you to invest more so that once the president assents to the bill, you will be able to sail the opportunities and save people upcountry who cannot afford to come to Mulago.”
He asked the university management to submit request forms so that they can be helped.
First forward, the deputy Speaker pledged to work closely with the executive to push for working permits waivers for foreign professors coming to teach in private universities.
At least 2,253 students graduated from Kampala International University today. They included 933 female graduands (41%) and 1,320 male graduands (59%). Six students graduated with PhD in various respective disciplines
19 students graduated with first class degree with Sierra Leone national Koroma Samuel B.M topping the list with a CGPA of 4.71 in Bachelor of Telecommunication Engineering. Somali national Abdukadar Mohammed, and Ugandan Resty Nalwanga became second with a CGPA of 4.66 in Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Law, respectively. They were awarded certificates of merit for academic excellence
Speaking to Parrots Media shortly after the graduation ceremony, Abdukadar Mohammed one of the best students expressed readiness to integrate the knowledge obtained at KIU to promote ethics in the accounting industry and transform livelihoods both in Uganda and at home in Somalia.
“The accounting field is flegged with people who have done alot of unethical stuffs, may be for the future, I am hoping that the batch, we who have graduated are going to be ethical. So, I am going to promote ethics and integrity,” Abdukadar said
