The Prime Minister of Buganda Kingdom, Charles Peter Mayiga, has officially launched the 20th edition of the Airtel Masaza Cup 2024, urging participants to maintain maximum discipline for a successful tournament.
Speaking at the launch ceremony held at Bulange Mengo gardens, Mayiga emphasized that the Masaza Cup tournament was established to nurture grassroots talent among youth across the kingdom’s counties and surrounding regions. However, he stressed that this cannot be achieved without discipline.
Mayiga acknowledged Airtel’s continued support, which has significantly contributed to the growth of the tournament, now a highly anticipated event on Uganda’s sports calendar. He expressed gratitude for Airtel’s instrumental support, encouraging the public to use their network for communication.
This year’s tournament will feature 18 teams from the 18 counties, with the opening match scheduled for Saturday, June 22, 2024, in Bulemeezi, where Bulemeezi County will host Bululi County. The tournament aims to rally the kingdom’s men and Ugandans to join the fight against HIV/AIDS by 2030.
Ali Balunywa, Sales and Distribution Director at Airtel Uganda, reiterated their commitment to sustaining the tournament, which has successfully promoted young footballers and opened doors to new opportunities. Since its inception in 2004, the Buganda Kingdom has implemented various initiatives, including the Masaza Football tournament, contributing to the socio-economic development of communities and the country at large.
